The Port is a deep-water port governed by a special district of the State of California and home to the Port of Los Angeles, the largest port in the United States and the second largest in California.
In 1983, the district and the city of Port Hueneme reached an agreement to achieve improvements such as widening the road. The agreement recognised that the city's roads had to be maintained due to port and lorry traffic and granted payments to the city. However, improvements were no longer needed and improvements have since been re-evaluated and additional police stations from both cities are no longer used by the port.
This created 160 jobs and also facilitated access to the Naval Base in Ventura County, where the auto processing plant is located. The port has partnered with a number of local businesses in the region, such as the Port of Los Angeles, to feed key workers and the local community.

In 1898, the railroad line that connected Ventura to Los Angeles crossed the Santa Clara River near El Rio with a new bridge. The line went south to the town of Oxnard, which was founded in 1894 as a result of the American beet and sugar factory built by the Oxard Brothers in the middle of a plain. An original quay was built to serve the new farmers of the Oxnard Plain and became the first port of entry into the United States and the largest port in California at that time.
